Filmmaking Opportunity: Baxter of California Video

I’ve recently been approached by JP Mastey of Baxter of California about working with the AdBakery community on a video project. Just wanted to run our thoughts by you guys to gauge interest.

Firstly, Baxter of California is a premium men’s grooming company out of CA. Their products are carried in boutique shops (i.e. Fred Segal) around the world. They are not large, but they are a very cool brand with some great heritage.

JP was in touch because he is interested in creating a short web video for Baxter (Sure Lock is what brought him to the site). They have no traditional advertising budget, and currently rely on press to gain word-of-mouth.

So here’s the ask - JP is wondering whether he can get a sharable video made for approx $2500. He is aware this is just a fraction of what professional production houses would need, but this is the reality of what is available. Personally I think often the best creative ideas come out of limited budget (we made SureLock for well under $1000). So we are hoping some of you will view this as an opportunity to work with a cool brand, and a client who wants to push the envelope, believes in the power of granting artistic freedom, and will support the project with a press push.

So there are a couple ways we were thinking of approaching this:

1) A contest – entrants produce and submit videos. J.P. selects a winning video and the filmmaker takes home the cash prize

2) Pitch process – members pitch ideas and JP selects a winning idea. The idea creator could have as much or as little involvement as they wish - and financial details are up for negotiation depending on whether the winner is a filmmaker. For example – If I want to make the video, I will be granted the full sum to do so. If I am not a filmmaker, but I write an idea JP wants to produce, we might agree that he can use it for $500. Then he can produce the video separately. You get writer credit.

Personally I prefer the second approach because not everyone is a filmmaker, and I’d like to include as many people as possible in the idea pitch process. Also, it will save people from spending too much of their own cash on the project if they’re not the winning submission. Obviously there are some copyright concerns with this option, but JP has agreed to sign a waiver assuring he won’t use ideas without writer’s permission.

So I’m looking to you – the community – for some thoughts. Would anyone be interested in this project? Any opinions on the process? I'm sure you'll have some more questions... and obviously I will provide some more details if there is sufficient interest.

What do you say?

Details are up on the mainpage now. I'm going to send out a note to all bakers in a few hours, but thought I'd give you guys first notice - since you've shown interest from the start. Let me know if you have questions or feedback. And good luck! -Sean

Hey guys. Sorry for the delay. The details will go up this Monday (the 22nd), and the pitch submission period will close October 20. If you want to get a head start I'd suggest taking a look at Baxter's products here and glance through this gold mine for some viral marketing inspiration.

See you here Monday.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. While there are good arguments for both options, it looks like the majority prefers the pitch process. So we'll try this approach.

I'm currently working with JP at Baxter to put together a little brief - should have it up here next week. We will allot 4 weeks for people to get their ideas/pitches submitted. Cool?

I really like the contest aspect, rather than a pitch. Sometimes the idea can get lost in the translation into words. Not everyone can write good pitches. It's better to SEE IT and then let people decide. To me, it makes it more democratic.

Yes, I'm interested in the project. If you go with option 2 then I think the submission period should be 4 weeks. Enough time for word to spread and solidify a pitch.
